Exclusive Interview With Oscar Adan Lopez Parres

Who is God?”

Directed by Oscar Adan Lopez Parres

First of all, congratulations for your remarkable short film!

- Your film tells a strong story! How did the idea come about?

Who is God? This question arose from another: What can be considered life? Is it merely a random phenomenon occurring in biological beings, or is it something more? Through this short film, we aim to present this idea as simply as possible, with the intention that any human being on the face of the Earth can understand the message. It was created as a love letter to humanity. And what better way to convey this message than by using artificial intelligence, since the plot itself addresses this theme.

- How was the relationship with your team?

It’s excellent. We are students who decided to embark on this project, and the entire journey has been incredibly rewarding. All the achievements we’ve accomplished wouldn’t have been possible without this wonderful team.

- In addition to a great story, the animation tecnique is very interesting. How has the process of creating the settings and characters been? (inspirations, times, details)

The animation technique used was the generation of images created with artificial intelligence. In depicting each image, we sought to represent every facet of the human being and every existing ethnicity, aiming for a global message. We placed significant importance on women, as they are the creators of life. Additionally, we aimed for every culture to feel included and not excluded from this message. We gave great importance to time, portraying it as humanity's most inseparable companion.

- Can you tell us any difficulties or anecdotes you had during the filming?

Certainly! During the creative process for the landscapes in our film, we decided to take a few trips to various locations in Mexico to gather inspiration and authentic references. One particularly memorable trip was to the Yucatán Peninsula. We were in awe of the stunning cenotes and ancient Mayan ruins. At one point, while sketching and taking photos at Chichen Itza, a friendly local offered to give us an impromptu history lesson. This unexpected encounter not only enriched our understanding of the site but also sparked new ideas for our project. These experiences not only enhanced the visual authenticity of our film but also deepened our appreciation for Mexico's diverse and rich cultural heritage. It was an invaluable part of our creative journey.

- How would you define your personal experience with cinema as a filmmaker?

Managing everything with our own resources is undoubtedly challenging, as it requires substantial investment in both publicity and financial support, not to mention the time commitment involved. Nevertheless, seeing nearly 130 festivals believe in our project has made all the effort worthwhile. This recognition affirms our dedication and passion, making every obstacle we faced along the way seem like a stepping stone to success.

- What is the life of the filmmaker like in Mexico?

Life as a filmmaker in Mexico is both exciting and challenging. The country is rich with diverse cultures, landscapes, and stories, providing endless inspiration for creative projects. However, it also comes with its hurdles, such as securing funding and resources, especially for independent filmmakers. The film community here is incredibly supportive and collaborative, which helps a lot. There's a strong sense of camaraderie among filmmakers, and we've been fortunate to have opportunities to showcase our work at various festivals. Despite the challenges, the passion for storytelling and the vibrant film culture make it a rewarding experience.

- Has the film met your expectations when planning it?

Not only has it met my expectations, but it has exceeded them. Many festivals have believed in this project, completely changing our lives. This is the first project created with Artificial Intelligence to have copyright protection in Mexico. This achievement is not only significant for us but also opens the door for everyone who chooses to create in collaboration with this powerful tool that is AI.

- Can you tell us something about your next job? Do you have in mind the making of a feature film?

As our first short film, this project has taught us many valuable lessons. At the moment, we are working on some music and video projects for a company, but in the future, I wouldn't rule out the idea of a more ambitious project, such as a feature film.
